It was hours later when Micah awoke to the sound of growls and pacing on the other side of the wall. He smiled to himself, remembering the care Daniel had taken to see that his every need and desire was well sated before finally showering and falling asleep. It was a fitful sleep to be sure, as his cat wasn’t comfortable with Maxie and TJ being so close. He could tell they blamed him for the trouble Daniel was in—and they were right. If it hadn’t been for Micah, they wouldn’t be on the run.

“What are you thinking so hard about?” Daniel whispered into his ear, holding him snug against his chest. Micah couldn’t help it, he started purring, he felt so safe in Daniel’s arms.

“It’s not important.” Micah didn’t want to worry Daniel more. He’d been so good in accepting Micah. He didn’t seem to mind how badly his life had been thrown into chaos by the weirdness of Micah’s unique biology.

“Micah, talk to me. I can feel how upset you are. Don’t hide from me.”

Sighing, Micah worried his lower lip as he tried to find the words to explain. “It’s just...I’m causing you nothing but trouble. I never believed I had a mate, much less that I’d ever find him.” Micah turned around in Daniel’s arms and rubbed his face into Daniel’s chest in a very cat-like manner, covering Daniel with his scent. “Now that I have you, the last thing I want to do is cause trouble.”

Daniel ran his hand up and down Micah’s back. “There isn’t anything in this world I wouldn’t give you or do for you, Micah. The fact Leopold thinks he can keep shifters prisoner, his own personal collection of people, is against our laws. You did nothing wrong.”

“But they blame me.” Micah motioned with his head toward the door. “If I wasn’t your mate...”

“They just don’t understand. We’ve been friends since we were cubs. This isn’t the first time trouble has followed me home, but I’ve never attracted the attention of the Paranormal Council. They’re worried.” Daniel rubbed his cheek against Micah’s hair. “How are you feeling this morning?”

“Pretty good, actually.” Micah’s cat was relaxed, and the couple hours sleep had helped.

“We know you’re awake…” Maxie growled through the door. “You can’t just pretend I’m not here!”

Daniel groaned and kissed his mate gently. “Let’s go talk to my friends and see if we can’t get some of this cleared up.” Maxie pounded impatiently on the door between the two rooms, then stopped. “Preferably before Maxie has a coronary.” Daniel sat up and grabbed his pants from the floor.

“I heard that, Daniel! Get your mated ass out here so we can figure out this mess,” Maxie grumbled.

“Give us a second to get dressed, Maxie,” Daniel hollered back, smiling at his mate, who’d begun to bite his lower lip. “I wish I could spend the entire day loving on you.”

“I wish we could, too,” Micah huffed and got out of bed, grabbing his clothes.
